           James Technical Services Limited having been involved in electric car, battery development and testing over the past 7 years have now installed two 11kW charging points at the factory in Talgarth mid Wales. These points can be used by customers and employees &amp;#55357;&amp;#56842;

           JTS have always been following the progress of the battery development and have purchased their first electric vehicle which will be used by the employees to carry out sales / site visits.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿

           The container test chamber below is used by various car manufacturers for electric vehicle battery testing. This is just one example of a battery testing facility JTS can supply.

            JTS were asked by local councillor William Powell to help out refreshing a storage container used by Talgarth Town FC juniors and ladies.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            After some initial discussions and a quick cad mock up to agree the paint scheme the JTS team began to work on the project. This happened with the help of the Black Mountains College (Power) and Talgarth Building Supplies (Paint) and the JTS workforce.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As you can see the container has had a new lease of life and we hope the guys using the container like the paint work! 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           ‘Good news TTFC under 10’s celebrated a home victory with the team having a photo and the container used as a back drop!’

            JTS Ltd is the only environmental chamber manufacturer in Wales, and one of very few remaining in the UK. With owners Glen and Sue James looking to step back, solutions were sought to enable the business to continue and evolve.

            The proposal to transfer the Company to an Employee Ownership Trust was met with unanimous approval. With the support of Employee Ownership Wales, the move will enable the continued employment of a skilled and committed team.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

            New Managing Director, David Hunter, is looking forward to implementing plans for further developing the business, including offering apprenticeships, for the benefit of all employees.

      <title>Maximising test load capacity</title>

            An issue faced by many customers is how to achieve the most test capacity without impacting on chamber performance. Putting the maximum test load in and still achieving even distribution and stability is a challenge when building bespoke equipment.

            &#xD;

            Airflow is key and having a good understanding of how a customer will load their product ensures the best results are achieved. 
           &#xD;

            For one JTS customer who’s test cycle lasts several months, incorporating steady slow ramps and long dwells, humidity distribution is critical. For them the distribution accuracy is so paramount the chamber is regularly calibrated using the 9 point mapping system. One probe is placed in each corner just away for the chamber wall and one in the centre, the allowable tolerance in this scenario is 2% rh. During tests if the humidity fluctuates out of specification in any area of the chamber, the test is aborted. 
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Bespoke racking can help resolve distribution issues and the rack on this recent project was built to ensure good even air flow and ensure stability.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            With a temperature range of -20°C to +80°C and a humidity range of 20 to 98% the chamber spends a lot of time testing at high temperature and high humidity, over 95%. These conditions are harsh, so the test frame was built of stainless steel and to enable easy product loading, sliding compartments were incorporated in the design.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Fully loaded this racking weighs around 600kg, so a reinforced chamber floor was essential.
          &#xD;

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            Reliability of chambers that do long term testing is essential, down time causes testing backlogs and unwanted stress. Time spent understanding what is required of a chamber and how it is going to be used, ensures JTS get the design and build correct.

           The evolving test requirements for Electric Vehicle battery packs means test specifications are constantly being pushed to new boundaries. JTS has risen to these challenges with our range of containerised test chambers. With extensive experience in the design and build of reliable high-performance bespoke environmental test chambers we provide solutions to large multi-national companies, both here in the UK and overseas.

           JTS has an ethos of working closely with customers and this proved invaluable with a recent design brief for a containerised test facility. The build specification required a temperature controlled test chamber, an office area for engineers and an area for refrigeration plant and the customer’s chiller.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Our design utilises a 30ft tunnel container with an additional personnel door for access to the office. A side window introduces natural light to the office and louvre panels facilitate a flow of fresh air through the plant area.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The 2m x 4m test area provides a controlled environment over a range of +20°C to +40°C, with capacity for test loads dissipating up to 10kw. The ceiling mounted air handling unit is fitted with a fan speed controller, allowing the customer to control the airflow within the chamber. A bunded anti-slip floor enables safe containment of any spilt test fluids, up to a depth of 100mm. Access for loading is via double doors at one end of the container and a fire rated personnel door gives access from the office.  An array of IP65 rated 230V and 400v sockets are fitted either side of the test area for customer use.

           For safety a 60 minute fire rated bulkhead is incorporated between the chamber and the 2m x 3.5m office area. Laminated insulation panels line this area and an aluminium anti-slip floor gives a clean bright working environment. Further enhancements include air conditioning, continual fresh air purge and emergency LED lighting.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The plant room at the end of the container houses a Bitzer Ecolite air cooled condensing unit and the cooling plant for the air conditioning system. Free space is also allocated in this area for the customer’s test load chiller and their Statx fire suppression system.
          &#xD;

           One of the exciting things about the work we do at JTS is the fact that no two projects are the same.

            Customer needs can be varied and sometimes the solution seems impossible, but most are issues that can be resolved, especially if JTS are invited into discussions at the early stages of a project.

           Obviously that element of the job was outside JTS areas of expertise, but we found a lifting specialist in the area that meant we were able to meet all the build requirements without any issues and delays to the project timeline.

           JTS have recently worked with a great customer who needed help to resolve a dilemma. 
          &#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           They were in the process of relocating to a fantastic new facility but their current chamber was just not up to being moved again and the existing cooling plant was extremely dated and inefficient. The project had lost valuable time in the pre-planning stage and delivery was getting critical, so the customer needed to find someone that would be able to design, build and install the chamber in a tight time frame.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           The chamber specification was for a walk in room with a footprint of approx. 3m x 4.5m, which can be programmed to cycle temperature between -20°C and +60°C with an average rate of change of 0.2°C/min.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The customer tests multiple Process Gas Chromatographs at any one time, so the inside of the chamber was fully fitted out with electrical sockets to power up the test items. An enhanced safety system with fresh air purge was incorporated in the design due to the nature of the chromatographs and the gases fed through them.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The new refrigeration system was located external to the main building, which resulted in a pipe run of approx. 50m between the plant and the chamber. JTS selected a 6hp Bitzer Ecostar unit for the cooling system, which along with its key features of good efficiency and low noise levels, also incorporates a weather proof housing, giving a smart modern look to the plant area.
          &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

         James Technical Services is an established independent, specialist manufacturer – designing and building high-performance environmental test chambers for a wide variety of industries.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           Our mission is to work closely with our customers to provide innovative solutions for their product development and quality assurance.  As such, we are delighted to have been working on a project with Grayson Thermal Systems who is the market-leading supplier of cooling, HVAC and e-mobility systems across a variety of industries. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           The design brief was to build a large environmental test chamber to provide controlled temperature conditions between -30°C and +55°C with some test loads dissipating up to 30kw. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           The combination of a ceiling-mounted cooling unit, fitted with three EC fans and a speed-controlled Ecostar Bitzer condensing unit ensure maximum efficiency in full and part load operations.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           Double doors and a removable aluminium ramp give easy access to a test area that is 2.8m wide x 3.8m deep and 2m high.  The high load-bearing anti-slip floor is fitted with drainage points to facilitate the safe containment of test fluids used within the customer processes.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           One wall of the room is fitted with an inlet and an outlet port allowing the customer to connect their test product up to an external conditioned temperature and humidity cyclone air supply.  This cyclone air is mixed and conditioned in an insulated enclosure adjacent to the main test area where humidity is introduced via a steam lance.  To give full testing flexibility two insulated stainless steel bungs are provided to isolate the cyclone system when it is not required.
          &#xD;

    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           As with any bespoke design, it is key that the customer interface is accurate, informative and easy to navigate, so for this JTS use the Watlow F4T touch screen programmable controller which permits custom screens to be created.   Taking full advantage of ethernet connectivity the chamber can be run and monitored from a PC anywhere on the network.

    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           With the chamber installed and commissioned, Grayson Thermal Systems can look forward to a future of reliable testing backed by our after-sales support for scheduled maintenance and calibration, with a quick efficient response should a breakdown occur.

      <title>Inside an Environmental test chamber</title>

         An environmental test chamber, often referred to as a climatic chamber, is an enclosure used to test the effects of specific environmental conditions.  These tests are carried out on industrial products, materials, electronic devices, biological items and many other components.
        &#xD;

         The chambers operate by controlling the parameters of temperature and humidity, with a good airflow being an important part in achieving even distribution and uniformity.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Temperature Control
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          To achieve a set level of temperature the chamber must be able to both heat and cool to achieve and control at the desired level.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Heating
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          – this is done using electrical heating elements sized accordingly to the chamber specification and positioned in the airflow to give even distribution and uniformity.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Cooling
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          – this is done using a mechanical cooling system with close loop control.  The main parts of a single stage cooling system are compressor, condenser, expansion valve, solenoid valves and cooling coil (Evaporator). Evaporators are sized to achieve a specific cooling duty and are generally located in a conditioning plenum to give even distribution into the test area.  A single stage system will achieve temperatures down to -40°C.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          A cascade system is a two stage cooling system and has the addition of a second compressor.  The system uses two refrigerants, one type for the first stage and another for the second stage.  A cascade system will achieve temperatures down to -65°C.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Humidity Control
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          To achieve a set level of humidity the chamber must be able to both humidify and dehumidify in order to achieve and control at the desired level.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Humidity
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          – this is done by introducing steam into the test area, the steam is generated outside the test area and is pulsed into the conditioning plenum in a controlled manner.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Dehumidity
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          – this is done by creating a controlled cold surface using the main refrigeration cooling system, moisture from the turbulent airflow is then condensed on to this cold surface.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           All test chamber utilise these basic components and it is the expertise at JTS that pulls together the right combinations to ensure that the chambers we supply meet the customer specification.

         Here at JTS we have successfully navigated our way through the past 12 months of the pandemic.  Having reacted quickly at the start, with working from home and some furlough, we were able to get our safety measure in place before striving to  achieve another successful business year.

         In Mid Wales we have been very fortunate that the vaccination programme has been meeting and exceeding Welsh Government targets, so here at JTS we are on the point of having 80% of our staff vaccinated with the last 20% on the short notice list.
         &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Working with our external safety adviser, Dave Thomas of Thomas Safety Services Ltd, we were able to get our Covid-19 risk assessment completed and actioned promptly, enabling us to resume with our service work and site installation.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          There will be further challenges for us all as we progress carefully through the next stages of living with the constant presence of Covid-19, but with our whole team onboard JTS are ready to meet the challenges with our proactive, safe and positive action plan.

         We work closely with our clients to build test solutions for individual company requirements, often involving innovative approaches.
         &#xD;

           One such project, currently, is for University of South Wales' Centre for Automotive and Power Systems Engineering (CAPSE). The team there are working with major companies to test new battery technologies, not only for the automotive industry but for National Grid and renewable energies too.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           JTS has to date converted twelve 30 ft shipping containers into specialist self-contained ‘test cells’ for temperature and humidity testing at CAPSE’s Pontypridd site. Battery testing can be highly volatile and to minimise risk in this case, JTS engineers designed an innovative CO2 cascade system, capable of achieving a range of +80 / -40c at high rates of temperature change. As an inert gas, CO2 has a major advantage in this application over alternative refrigerants which are either highly flammable, less efficient or have a far higher GWP (Global Warming Potential). 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           Our relationship with CAPSE is ongoing, providing support and maintenance, and we’re now looking into training USW personnel to carry out simple troubleshooting and maintenance. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

         For an environmental test chamber engineer, the answer to an opening line of “What do you do?” can provoke one of two outcomes: curiosity - or a slightly glazed look and a wish of having never asked!

         So, what is an environmental test chamber? In this short series we’ll introduce you to the how’s and why’s.
         &#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           The simplest way to explain what a test chamber is, is to describe it as a highly insulated cupboard, fitted with various systems to simulate environmental conditions eg refrigeration for cold and humidity for damp. It can be small enough to fit on a bench – or big enough to hold a car or two. They are used to research, develop and manufacture many of the products in everyday use.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           The chamber has a controller and can be programmed to give different cycles through hot and cold, dry and humid, even rain or dust or salt spray, according to requirements and specifications. The tests can also ensure adherence to certain Standards for products.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           The test results help predict the potential lifespan of a product or material, and how well it will stand up to the conditions it will be expected to operate in. Test chambers can also be used to evaluate product quality and reliability, and to identify manufacturing weaknesses.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
      
           Examples of the products our test chambers have been used for:

           • Smoke detectors, fire alarms &amp;amp; toxic gas detectors;

           • Aerospace components (taking off in a hot desert, going up into cold atmosphere).
